For anyone who grew up with a garden, apartment living can require some getting used to. It doesn’t matter how big the apartment is – you will surely miss having an outdoor space to call your own. That’s why private outdoor spaces like balconies and loggias are highly sought after by apartment hunters everywhere. Getting a bit of fresh air without leaving your home is considered a luxury by most city-centre residents. Who wouldn’t want an outdoor retreat in the own home?
Especially over the last few months, with worldwide lockdowns keeping people at home, any outdoor space seems a treat. In fact, balconies around the world have been a way for people to connect while still practising social distancing. Even before Covid-19, and surely after it, private outdoor spaces were and will continue to be an asset to any home.
For some reason, many apartment dwellers don’t make the best use of what is essentially an extra room.
People are willing to pay more in rent if it means they’ll have a place to grow their own tomatoes or sunbathe at home. Yet, once they have such a place, many renters disregard it, and instead focus on furnishing and decorating their interior.
An Overlooked Space
Despite being a coveted feature on apartment listings, balconies and loggias are sadly often neglected. Some people use them as extra storage space. Some as a space to hang their laundry, or keep their recycling bins. For some reason, many apartment dwellers don’t make the best use of what is essentially an extra room.

Perhaps it’s hard to see the potential in your balcony because it seems too small or oddly shaped. Maybe it’s because it’s hidden under old furniture, recycling containers, and drying racks. For some, it’s a question of privacy. Many people feel too exposed and don’t want strangers or neighbours watching them while they enjoy some sunshine and fresh air.
Some people don’t see the point in investing in a space they won’t use that much because of local weather conditions. Obviously, your location plays a significant role in how much of the year you’ll be able to make full use of your outdoor space. But no matter where you live, you’re bound to get at least a few months of outdoor time without having to leave your home. And the more pleasant you make it to spend time on, the more you actually will spend time on it!
Decorate & Style for an instant escape
Just as with interior spaces, updating colour and material finishes can instantly transform a balcony or loggia. Unfortunately, just as this space itself is often overlooked, those important aspects are as well. Renters especially may avoid using their outdoor areas if they’re in bad shape. They often shy away from any type of renovation because the cost and effort required just doesn’t seem worth it. But getting rid of peeling paint and revamping floors doesn’t have to break the bank, especially for a small space like a balcony.
A fresh coat of paint on the wall or railing fixture will immediately upgrade your space and set the mood for the rest of your design. Just make sure to get permission from the owner and respect any council regulations regarding building facades.

If your balcony floor has seen better days, cover it up. Trust me, it will make all the difference! If you’ve got a concrete slab, outdoor mats or floor paint can make a world of difference with minimal spending. (Again, don’t forget to get permission first!) Upgrade tiled floors with peel-and-stick decals that can be peeled off if you decide to move. If your budget has some wiggle room, you could even install interlocking deck tiles. These come in a variety of finishes, are easy to install, and can be packed up and used again should you ever move.
Manage Your Expectations
If size is what’s keeping you from giving your balcony the attention it deserves, worry not. The smallest of spaces can be maximised with a little creativity and imagination. Even a tiny Juliet balcony can provide you with an outdoor experience with the right design. They can feel like a bit of a rip off at first glance, some so small you can barely even stand on them.
Nevertheless, although you might not be able to fit any furniture outside, strategically placed seating inside will give you the same view as a larger balcony would. Simply include some plants and swing open your balcony doors for an outdoor experience.
If you’re fortunate enough to have more than a Juliet balcony, you’ll have significantly more options for your outdoor space. Consider the proportions of your balcony and how you would like to make use of your outdoor area. Do you just want a cosy spot to read a book in the sun, or perhaps a place to lounge while enjoying a drink with a friend? Maybe you’d like to dine al fresco all summer long, or maybe even grow your own food? Whatever the case, let the shape of your balcony and your preferred past-times dictate the primary use of the space.
Design with shape in mind
True balconies offer the most layout options. They are usually wide enough to hold furniture you can comfortably walk around. Long, narrow loggias are more common, and more limited with regards to layout. However, the design options are limitless with so many styles, colours, and furniture pieces to choose from.
If your space is narrow, but not very long, you can make it feel wider by creating a wall-to-wall sitting area on one or even both sides of your loggia. Keeping the seating off to the side will make the space feel larger, and also allow you to add a folding table for occasional meals. Make use of narrow loggia walls by incorporating plants vertically, either on shelves or low-profile trellises. The same can be done with open balconies, and as a bonus, you get a little extra privacy.

If your outdoor space is very long, you might as well use that length to inspire your design. Place a couple of bistro chairs and a small table against the wall for maximising the view. You might also consider running a bench along the wall, with a folding, floating bar opposite it. Making use of any vertical spaces for plants is a good idea in this case as well. The more you can free up the floor space you have, the bigger your balcony will feel.
Keep it versatile
Creating a comfortable, useful space when we are limited with regards to shape and size requires some ingenuity. However, even well-proportioned balconies can benefit from the same space-saving tricks. Even if you can fit an entire dining set outside, you’ll want to make sure you can use your outdoor space in different ways. Folding or stackable furniture that can be easily tucked away will give you a more flexible space. They’re also easier to cover up and protect from the elements when not in use.
If you have the room, by all means, keep a few plants on the floor for visual variety. But don’t neglect the walls even if you have enough floor space for all your plants. A vertical garden will always be more interesting to look at than a plain wall or your neighbour’s neglected balcony. Besides, the more room you have to move around, the more versatile your outdoor area will be.
Create a cosy & private space
Not everyone needs extra space to entertain. Some people prefer more space to retreat and recharge on their own. Small balconies can function perfectly as private havens for rest and relaxation. In fact, their small size may even add to the cosy, secluded ambience essential for a mini outdoor oasis.

Extra-low seating will create a cocoon-type feel and the perfect atmosphere for your well-deserved me-time. You don’t even need to buy any outdoor furniture, cushions and mats will work just as well. Consider installing outdoor curtains for even more of a secluded feel. Drapery will add elegance to the space while shielding you from the sun, the wind, or your nosy neighbours.
Set the mood with lighting
While balconies and loggias are great for enjoying a sunny day, they can be just as enjoyable at night. In warmer climates, you might even avoid sitting outside when it’s too hot, especially if you have air-conditioning! However, come nightfall, your balcony can be a magical place to unwind.
Soft lighting can create a beautiful spot to enjoy the evening breeze. Use candles or fairy lights for an enchanting atmosphere, or coloured lights and paper lanterns for a more playful, holiday vibe. A variety of solar powered options exist, making the addition of outdoor lighting easy, affordable, and eco-friendly.
Time to retreat…
…to your balcony, that is. It’s time to make use of your little slice of outdoor heaven. Your recycling bins and clothing hanger will forgive you, and you deserve to enjoy the space more than they do.
